Re: Ties!
Fri, December 14, 2007 - 6:59 PMI used to make neckties for my Dad, when he was employed (now retired). He had an office job and wore a tie every doggone day.
I learned there is a REASON why ties were made from slippery fabric ... it needs to slide whilst the knot is being adjusted! The ties I made from regular, ol' fabric had too much friction; my Dad always had trouble adjusting them properly (but he wore them anyway!).
Also ... as I remember ... one step involves hand basting the tie fabric to the interfacing. The basting stitches remain in the tie. I learned you need to make these stitches VERY loose and, in fact, have some excess thread at each end of the tie. The reason being is that since the tie is cut on the bias, when the finished tie is pulled and knotted into place, the bias stretches quite a bit (as bias is supposed to do). If your basting thread isn't long enough or if you've basted too tightly, those stitches will *pop*.
Having said all that, those lessons were applicable to the pattern I was using waaaaaaay back in the long-ago 1970's .... it very well could be that your pattern instructions are different. I strongly suggest you make a test version first and have your recipient try it before you devote your time and fabrics to the "real thing".
But, once you get everything under control, your men will have the most WONDERFUL personalized tie collection EVER. :-)

I've just taken apart storebought ties to get the pattern -- I've often taking out the stitches to remove the interfacing so the ties hang softer and more feminine-like -- I wonder if I'm missing something by doing that.
