So I just received a serger for my birthday. I've been pining for one for a while! It's a Singer QuantumLock and I've spent much time trying to figure it out and threading it and all that good stuff. But I've run into a problem and thought I'd come to people here with serging experience before I called a service number.
This is a five thread serger. When threading the various paths I've successfully been able to get some stitches happening. However whenever I try to thread the Lower Looper, it doesn't work. At all. It will just move the fabric through and the needle will go through the fabric, but will not catch or anything.
When threading the Cover stitch Looper, it works ok. A little loose, but I think that is just my need to play with the tension. So the thing is that the Cover stitch Looper and the Lower Looper are very similar in threading paths and all so if I can make the Cover stitch Looper work, I should be able to make the Lower Looper work, because I assume that means I get it. I've tried it over and over again following the directions exactly and there don't seem to be any variables that I'm missing.
Any ideas? Anyone run into anything like this and have ideas for troubleshooting? Or is probably just an issue with the machine?
I appreciate any help anyone can offer since I'm extremely frustrated at this point...I've never threaded something quite so much before in my life and taken so long to do it and have it not work. So advice would be lovely!
Thanks so much!
Patti

Re: Serger help!
Wed, February 6, 2008 - 6:23 PMone common trick is that maybe the thread isn't fully hooked through the dials - meaning, if you pull on the thread before and after the thread's entrance to the dial which controls the tension, you may find the thread isn't in there all the way, which causes the tension to be off. Just pulling the thread on both sides helps it get in there to the correct tension.
I hope that makes sense. -

Re: Serger help!
Wed, February 6, 2008 - 10:35 PMOk....so you mean in the very beginning part of the threading? So at the very top before I actually get into the area beneath the looper cover? Sorry for sounding a bit ignorant, this is all new to me along with the terminology. A serger is a whole different beast than my normal sewing machine than I'm used to.
If I get what you're trying to say, I suppose that could be possible and will try playing with that.
Thanks! -

Re: Serger help!
Fri, February 8, 2008 - 5:36 AMGirlie, take the whole serger to the local sewing machine repair shop. If you tell them you can't thread the thing and you're a newbie, they will do it for free. They will usually adjust tensions for you if you bring them a scrap.
Seriously, leave it to the experts right out of the gate. The worst thing you can do is to diagnose a problem on a space ship using your experience with airplanes. ; )

Re: Serger help!
Fri, February 8, 2008 - 9:23 PMyep. sometimes the threads get all tangled at the end, because they didn't have enough tension at the beginning.
I kept having that problem until I kept rethreading it and just happened to tug on the thread near the tension dial. To my surprise, it wasn't in there at all, and the thing works like a charm now. -

Re: Serger help!
Fri, February 8, 2008 - 10:36 PMWell it turned out that it wasn't in there (at least the last time I had threaded it), but it still didn't work. However, I found an extremely detailed workbook online and I was able to figure out what was wrong. I wasn't adjusting the upper looper clutch properly....long story how that came about, but as of today, I can do overedge stitching!
Thanks for the advice! Very appreciated! -

Re: Serger help!
Wed, March 5, 2008 - 10:16 AMWell this is for a specific serger only, but could be helpful for those who have it. I have a Singer Quantumlock 14T957DC. This is the link: singerco.com/accessories/manuals.html
Just click on the one that says "Workbook" and it's a pdf.
