I am new to this group so I hope I am not making an inappropriate request.

I am looking for someone who has an industrial machine who can repair the tear in my unlined fleece jacket. The tear is along a side seam. I have taken it to several places to be repaired but they all tell me it it would look best if I could find someone with an industrial machine. I believe they mean an industrial serger.

Is there anyone out there who can help me, either by offering their services or by recommending someone who has an industrial serger who does alterations?

I live in the Peninsula area, but I'm willing to drive anywhere in the bay area.

Thank you so much!
This is a resource for all those into textiles and the fashion industry (in any shape or form).
Call it a one stop shop for networking, sourcing materials, finding help, marketing your designs and gatherings in your area.
Here is a great example:
You have a gig that needs fulfillment, here you can find people to make it happen, post your left over materials when the job is done and potentially clean the house because someone in your area needs what you have, thus connecting you to more people while liquidating and have a place to post pics.

Hi, I'm seeking like minds.

I grew up designing and making my own clothes since a little girl, and apprenticed with Mirage in Melbourne, Australia’s largest CMT house for major Oz designers; before studying fine art at Heatherleys in London. I was also sponsored by Mirage and a runner-up in the Australian Fashion Awards. Then I traveled and lived in a few different countries and got into planet activism and events, then running an online arts community, then helping manage festivals. Now current fashion has caught up with the designs in my head and the ideals in my heart and I recently returned to designing wearable art.

The stuff I’m now designing and reconstructing are Eco Couture, individual one-off’s made from recycled and vintage fabrics. My design skills are coming back and improving with each collection batch. Sketches and photos of recent experiments are up at http://www.recycledfordancing.com plus I already have clothes in 2 boutiques, addresses are on the site under Retail Stores.

I also do custom stage gear, before working on festivals full time I actually did costumes for Music TV dancers, musicians, and theatre. I had a few designs on national TV way back when, on long running music TV show called Countdown. And I designed costumes for a whole Bertolt Brecht play at the Chelsea Playhouse in London, plus whole wardrobes for nightclub dancers and contemporary cabaret.

My current designs are inspired by San Francisco and Japanese street fashion, as well as European Couture and Burning Man. For me it is sculpture using textiles with a wearable framework and chaos, I take something that I see and mix it with something else that I see, each piece inspiring the next piece. Anyway take a peek at http://www.recycledfordancing.com for art’s sake, and keep me in mind when you are thinking of new additions to your wardrobe or recycling your wardrobe.
Thank you for being here.

But now my hands are tired of cutting and I am entertaining the thought of a rotary cutter. The main reason I never got one b4 is that none of the mats I've seen are big enuf to lay out the main thing I cut out which is pants...Anyway I would love to hear what cutters, and what size, others have used and if you know where to get a mat bigger than 28x36. Also wondering if anyone sharpens their own blades, as they seem quite expensive. Thanks

Does anyone have a copy of the 600-series Instructional DVD and/or Workbook that are usually supplied free with new purchases of Juki Sergers? If so, do you consider them worthwhile investments... and would you be willing to sell or lend them?

So I just received a serger for my birthday. I've been pining for one for a while! It's a Singer QuantumLock and I've spent much time trying to figure it out and threading it and all that good stuff. But I've run into a problem and thought I'd come to people here with serging experience before I called a service number.

This is a five thread serger. When threading the various paths I've successfully been able to get some stitches happening. However whenever I try to thread the Lower Looper, it doesn't work. At all. It will just move the fabric through and the needle will go through the fabric, but will not catch or anything.

When threading the Cover stitch Looper, it works ok. A little loose, but I think that is just my need to play with the tension. So the thing is that the Cover stitch Looper and the Lower Looper are very similar in threading paths and all so if I can make the Cover stitch Looper work, I should be able to make the Lower Looper work, because I assume that means I get it. I've tried it over and over again following the directions exactly and there don't seem to be any variables that I'm missing.

Any ideas? Anyone run into anything like this and have ideas for troubleshooting? Or is probably just an issue with the machine?

I appreciate any help anyone can offer since I'm extremely frustrated at this point...I've never threaded something quite so much before in my life and taken so long to do it and have it not work. So advice would be lovely!

Thanks so much!

Yeah, probably because it broke after the first use!

Anyway, when I took it home, it wouldn't make a chain, and it was VERY loud. After checking it out,I found that the needle would rub and snap against the Left Looper. The loud noise was the needle scraping against the looper. I thought the looper was maybe bent so I tried to adjust and it broke. That part costs $22.

Anyway, what the hell do I do? I already overpaid for this machine; $150! Now I gotta get it repaired? Does anyone have any advice before I start putting more money into this machine?? I was so stoked to finally have a serger and now it doesn't even work!

Hi. I have a mat which folds into 3 sections which I use in my massage therapy practice for doing Thai & Shiatsu massage, which I would love to have a cover made for in trade for my services as a bodyworker.
Something durable, zippered for easy covering & uncovering, and with a strap for carrying over shoulder when doing out-call massage.

When folded the mat dimensions are 27" X 61" X 12".

I am skilled, certified and offer out-call appointments in Swedish, Deep Tissue, Shiatsu, Thai Massage & Pranic Healing.
And have been practicing Tai Chi, Wuji Qigong & Yiquan since 1989, which I can offer foundational instruction in as well.
There is more information about my bodywork & qigong experience in my tribe profile.
The pattern is an OLD Perry Ellis for Vogue (as in, from when he was alive...) that I made up as a full length coat in like 1991 that I STILL wear/ This time I'm cutting it up into a "car coat" length, taking in the very wide lapels a touch, and replacing the "what WAS he thinking?" bland patch pockets with something fun.
But the fabric....AAAHHHHHH....I'll share my find, too. At Fabric Outlet on Mission off 17th, there is this weird synthetic velvet that has been heat treated/bonded so it forms teeny minipleats. Its black, shiny velvety stuff that at a glance is kind of like striped Persian lamb. AND IT IS #$%^#ing less then $4 a yard for nearly 6o" wide!!!!!!
so of course I splurged on a really really cool print for the lining :-)
won't have pix for a while cos I'm still fitting this in between the Other People's Orders....

PPS I also have a Pfaff embroidery sewing machine. My computer died and my new computer is not compatible with the old Pfaff. I've heard the new cable (which is quite expensive) doesn't always work. I have another cable (not a Pfaff) which has all the male and female parts to fit between my machine and computer, but for some reason, the disc that came with it can't be read. Any suggestions on this too?

Just wanted to let you know about this uber yard sale we're holding on the 14th of October. All of us are clearing our sewing rooms and closets (of course we'll fill them up as soon as we empty them, but we'll indulge the fantasy of having a clean space anyway). Should be a great time! (please forgive the cross-posting)

***Costumers Yard Sale***

Sunday, October 14, noon to 4pm
(no early-birds, please)

512 Laswell Ave, San Jose
near hwys 280 & 880
Use Yahoo! Maps to find us

8 costumers are selling their goodies in one place! Shop for fabric, patterns, historical & fantasy costumes, accessories, wigs, vintage clothing, Halloween & goth gear, handmade crafts -- bargains & surprises galore.

Looking for a reproduction 18th-c. gown, vintage ostrich plumes, or a traditional Egyptian belly-dance costume? How about a 1950s black taffeta dress, a reproduction 1850s Dickens Faire dress, or a red satin can-can costume? Maybe bolts of velvet & brocade fabric or wedding veil supplies are your thing? Come see these delights & more.

A few sellers will take PayPal, all will take cash. A communal dressing room with mirrors is available to try costumes on.

Visit the treasure trove of other costumers' closets. You never know what fabulous things you'll find!

Bonus for buyers:
This house is just blocks away from the hidden gem that is San Jose's Antique Row. Visit over a dozen jam-packed stores, selling everything from Victorian oak furniture to vintage 1950s dresses to Art Deco glassware -- often at better prices & less picked-over than in other parts of the Bay Area. We'll have a handout listing all the stores. Get a full day of treasure hunting in San Jose.

This event gets lots of exposure. We'll have makeup and hair people. You need to supply your own models ( I believe) and about four outfits. It takes place at 111 Minna in SF. Were using Hunan's next door as a staging area.
Send me a response with some samples of your stuff. No experience necessary. It's an informal rock it down the runway show.
This salon is part of the lead-in for an astounding event happening at SomArts that weekend, designed to bring artists, musicians, and the people who make it all happen together to meet each other and talk about their work. At CELLSpace we will have an art show in the gallery, puppetry and sewing workshops in the loft, musicians, free drinks and food, and panel discussions. The discussions will revolve around the ideas of producing arts, media, and change from a non-profit and for-profit perspective. What are the benefits of each format? How can artists navigate the world between the two for maximum freedom and maximum funding? Bay Area heavies from both sides of the fence will discuss why they have chosen the structure that they have and how they use it to get what they want.

BREAKING NEWS - CELLspace is facing massive crisis and needs your help! We will give the microphone to someone from the organization who can tell you all about what is going on and how you can get involved. Get your news fresh from the trenches. We love this community resource and want to fight to keep it! http://pandorastrunk.com http://artsandmedia.net/expo

with my tax return pending, i am getting ready to invest in a good dress form and industrial sewing machine.

i have been looking online at dress forms, and everything looks like junk. pretty much all ive seen is dritz & singer forms. Reviews are mixed on the Singer, while the Dritz is described by all reviewers as being absolute crap.

i dont want to dump $800 into it, but i want a good adjustable dress form preferably with a hem marker. does anyone out there own one that they love? if so, where did you get it and what did you pay for it?

also, i am looking to purchase a real industrial machine with a table/motor/head/etc. i use a juki at school but id like something with more than a straight stitch, preferably something also with zigzag or stitches for stretch fabric. again, i dont want to spend a fortune but i get that industrial machines are not cheap.

thanks!!

Butterfield 8 is a small but emerging company based in the East Bay. Following the vision of Artistic Director John Butterfield, the company is dedicated to bringing fresh approaches to classic and historical works, as well as showcasing new and experimental plays and ideas.

We are currently going into production for

A Midsummer Night’s Dream

This production will feature some non-traditional casting, with a strong possibility of same-sex couples in the leading roles, and supporting roles filled by either sex, all ages, and many “body-types.” We hope to emphasize movement with both staging and costuming, and may double-cast several roles.

The show will be in production through August and September,
and run weekends in October at Cue Productions in Concord.

Future productions this season will include
The Importance of Being Earnest and Taming of the Shrew.

A shop in Palo Alto off the 101, called the Spinnaker Shop (look it up in your yellow pages) is gone out of business. They're down to the last few yards of various fabric they're getting rid of at bargain prices. I know they have a bunch of vinyl left, and thread for industrial machines (heavier than what my little machine can handle), plus double-ended zippers.

They appear to be only open from 8-3pm weekdays.

I'm not at all associated with them, I just happened to find them and got some fabric for myself, and I know they'd love to find folks who could take some of this off their hands. It's the last of the last, and bargain for the right people!
