Does anyone know where I can find a local (Bay Area) supplier of quality stretch thread? Or even an online dealer with a good selection of colors. I'm new to the area and don't really know about and good shops yet. Any advise would be much appreciated.

Question About Costume and Fashion Design Industry in The Bay Area

Before I move, I want to check out my job prospects. I am a costume designer and fashion designer by trade.
So, I am wondering if you all have any information on clothing companies in the area that may need a new designer at some point, or have info on which theater costume shops are the best, and when their seasons are.

serger tutorials

I found a fabulous deal and recently purchased a lightly-used Juki MO-655 2/3/4/5 thread serger! It came with a reference guide and instruction booklet, but I really need some tutorials to get the most from this machine. Does anyone have a copy of the 600-series Instructional DVD and/or Workbook that are usually supplied free with new purchases of Juki Sergers? If so, do you consider them worthwhile investments... and would you be willing to sell or lend them?

This is my third sewing machine after a regular straight lockstitch and a semi-industrial zig-zag walking foot machine, so I'm familiar with sewing basics, but have never used a serger before. Can anyone recommend other educational sources such as favorite books or local bay-area classes? Thanks!

I'm contemplating getting a resale license, and I have to wonder, am I selling things or am I selling a service? Now, if I'm producing a line, or making objects and then try to hawk them online or at a fair of some sort, that's retail. But if I'm making a custom dress based on the ideas of a client, I bill by my service.

How do you deal with the legal accounting of your business? Do you have a resale/ wholesale license? How do you think of the work you do?

Serger help!

So I just received a serger for my birthday. I've been pining for one for a while! It's a Singer QuantumLock and I've spent much time trying to figure it out and threading it and all that good stuff. But I've run into a problem and thought I'd come to people here with serging experience before I called a service number.

This is a five thread serger. When threading the various paths I've successfully been able to get some stitches happening. However whenever I try to thread the Lower Looper, it doesn't work. At all. It will just move the fabric through and the needle will go through the fabric, but will not catch or anything.

When threading the Cover stitch Looper, it works ok. A little loose, but I think that is just my need to play with the tension. So the thing is that the Cover stitch Looper and the Lower Looper are very similar in threading paths and all so if I can make the Cover stitch Looper work, I should be able to make the Lower Looper work, because I assume that means I get it. I've tried it over and over again following the directions exactly and there don't seem to be any variables that I'm missing.

Any ideas? Anyone run into anything like this and have ideas for troubleshooting? Or is probably just an issue with the machine?

I appreciate any help anyone can offer since I'm extremely frustrated at this point...I've never threaded something quite so much before in my life and taken so long to do it and have it not work. So advice would be lovely!

Serger Troubleshooting...HELP!

Hi. I just bought a Singer Serger 14U44 from Craigslist yesterday. What a piece of crap! The guy said "Only used once, brand new..."

Yeah, probably because it broke after the first use!

Anyway, when I took it home, it wouldn't make a chain, and it was VERY loud. After checking it out,I found that the needle would rub and snap against the Left Looper. The loud noise was the needle scraping against the looper. I thought the looper was maybe bent so I tried to adjust and it broke. That part costs $22.

Anyway, what the hell do I do? I already overpaid for this machine; $150! Now I gotta get it repaired? Does anyone have any advice before I start putting more money into this machine?? I was so stoked to finally have a serger and now it doesn't even work!

rotary cutter preferences?

Okay, it's hard to believe, but I've been production sewing for a living for over 15 years and cut it all by hand. But now my hands are tired of cutting and I am entertaining the thought of a rotary cutter. The main reason I never got one b4 is that none of the mats I've seen are big enuf to lay out the main thing I cut out which is pants...Anyway I would love to hear what cutters, and what size, others have used and if you know where to get a mat bigger than 28x36. Also wondering if anyone sharpens their own blades, as they seem quite expensive. Thanks

Welted bias tape - local firm who makes it?

I'm making slipcovers and I don't want to make all the welted bias myself.
I know there used to be a company in SF called Bay Bias. You'd drop off your roll of fabric and they would make it for you, but I can't seem to find any contact info for them.
Are they still in business? Anyone have any info on them? Or if you know of any other companies? They don't have to be in the City. I'm actually down the Peninsula so even SJ is OK.

I need a tailor for a tuxedo coat

I have been given a super fancy tuxedo coat, but it's just a tiny bit too large. The giver doesn't have a tailor that he trusts to do the alterations, I guess because it is super fancy and special. It might be vintage, but I can't remember. I don't have it in my possession yet. I'm not going to risk doing alterations myself, so I'm looking for an experienced tailor somewhere between Berkeley and Santa Cruz. Any tuxedo tailors in here?

Something durable, zippered for easy covering & uncovering, and with a strap for carrying over shoulder when doing out-call massage.

When folded the mat dimensions are 27" X 61" X 12".

I am skilled, certified and offer out-call appointments in Swedish, Deep Tissue, Shiatsu, Thai Massage & Pranic Healing.

Leftover Plaster Gauze Strips

Place that DOESN'T Sell Sewing Machines!

I'm stunned!
Just drove down to Daly City to peruse sergers w/ an eye to buying one....and they are GONE. Empty storefront save for a few dismantled display racks, no signage, no notices....the website is still up and the phone is connected but simply rings and rings....I'm about to look up the Sta Rosa store and see if they exist.
Now I have to figure out where to buy a serger....

What are ya working on now?

This topic hasn't been revisited in a while, so I thought rather than resurrecting the last thread of it I'd start it anew....
I'm mostly working on custom sewing for others BUT finally got off my butt this wk about sewing a new jacket for myself.
The pattern is an OLD Perry Ellis for Vogue (as in, from when he was alive...) that I made up as a full length coat in like 1991 that I STILL wear/ This time I'm cutting it up into a "car coat" length, taking in the very wide lapels a touch, and replacing the "what WAS he thinking?" bland patch pockets with something fun.
But the fabric....AAAHHHHHH....I'll share my find, too. At Fabric Outlet on Mission off 17th, there is this weird synthetic velvet that has been heat treated/bonded so it forms teeny minipleats. Its black, shiny velvety stuff that at a glance is kind of like striped Persian lamb. AND IT IS #$%^#ing less then $4 a yard for nearly 6o" wide!!!!!!
so of course I splurged on a really really cool print for the lining :-)
won't have pix for a while cos I'm still fitting this in between the Other People's Orders....

Sewing Machine and Serger Check Up? And other questions

Does anyone have a clue when to take your machines in for tune ups and cleanings?

I've been using my machines like a workhorse. There is fuzz in them and as hard as I tried cleaning them out with a brush and blowing, it just isn't cutting the mustard.

Any suggestions?

PS I have an old Singer. Last year it started skipping stitches. I took it out this year and tried it again and the top thread isn't even catching the bobbin thread. Any clue what is going on?

PPS I also have a Pfaff embroidery sewing machine. My computer died and my new computer is not compatible with the old Pfaff. I've heard the new cable (which is quite expensive) doesn't always work. I have another cable (not a Pfaff) which has all the male and female parts to fit between my machine and computer, but for some reason, the disc that came with it can't be read. Any suggestions on this too?

been looking at stonemountain and daughter, but looking for alternatives as well.

Any suggestions on how to sell thousands of plus size patterns?

I have a huge collection of plus size patterns for ladies. I was overweight for most of my life, and then I lost 200 + pounds, and I have literally thousands of patterns from my days as a larger lady. I am cleaning out my craft/sewing room to make the house less cluttered and move myself into a life of simpler living.

Any ideas on a good way to market and sell the patterns? All are in EXCELLENT condition, and hundreds of them have never even been cut!

I appreciate your suggestions!

Tailoring class in Walnut Creek area?

Are there any tailoring classes (private? community college? stores? something else?) around? hello!

with my tax return pending, i am getting ready to invest in a good dress form and industrial sewing machine.

i have been looking online at dress forms, and everything looks like junk. pretty much all ive seen is dritz & singer forms. Reviews are mixed on the Singer, while the Dritz is described by all reviewers as being absolute crap.

i dont want to dump $800 into it, but i want a good adjustable dress form preferably with a hem marker. does anyone out there own one that they love? if so, where did you get it and what did you pay for it?

also, i am looking to purchase a real industrial machine with a table/motor/head/etc. i use a juki at school but id like something with more than a straight stitch, preferably something also with zigzag or stitches for stretch fabric. again, i dont want to spend a fortune but i get that industrial machines are not cheap.

So I have a question to put out to all of you. I have a team of amazing dedicated people who have been working on an art car for burning man. The double-decker bus is called Shagadelica and is covered in fur with lights behind it to make it glow. Apparently there are some problems with the way the fur was applied so there are some problem areas that need to be fixed. Our seamstress has taken ill so we're looking for someone to help. We will pay. :) The bus is in Oakland in a warehouse. Please respond quickly as time is of the essence.

Butterfield 8 is a small but emerging company based in the East Bay. Following the vision of Artistic Director John Butterfield, the company is dedicated to bringing fresh approaches to classic and historical works, as well as showcasing new and experimental plays and ideas.

We are currently going into production for

A Midsummer Night’s Dream

This production will feature some non-traditional casting, with a strong possibility of same-sex couples in the leading roles, and supporting roles filled by either sex, all ages, and many “body-types.” We hope to emphasize movement with both staging and costuming, and may double-cast several roles.

The show will be in production through August and September,
and run weekends in October at Cue Productions in Concord.

Various vinyl fabric, Palo Alto

A shop in Palo Alto off the 101, called the Spinnaker Shop (look it up in your yellow pages) is gone out of business. They're down to the last few yards of various fabric they're getting rid of at bargain prices. I know they have a bunch of vinyl left, and thread for industrial machines (heavier than what my little machine can handle), plus double-ended zippers.

They appear to be only open from 8-3pm weekdays.

I'm not at all associated with them, I just happened to find them and got some fabric for myself, and I know they'd love to find folks who could take some of this off their hands. It's the last of the last, and bargain for the right people!

RE-FASHION is a costume swap and modification event. Bring a bag or more of your unwanted costumes, finery, accessories, and notions, and something to hold your takeaways. Please, no underwear or swimwear. There will be a suggested donation, but the focus is recycling, and nobody will be turned away for lack of funds.

The swap begins with a giant collective pile of clothing, the unwanted costumes of all who attend. Everyone is welcome to dive in and find their next new, used items from the pile. Take as little or as much clothing from this pile as you like.

We’ll provide transformation stations, where you can cut, sew, glue, paint, bedazzle, and otherwise renew and combine someone else's rags into your riches.

There will be an outdoor area, where you can supervise your children as they play, and where children’s items will be swapped.

Sewing Vacation!

http://www.costumecollege.org/ is where I'm headed next month! Three days chock full of fabric, notions, and sewing for less then you normally spend for a one day workshop, thanks to volunteer teachers.

I will be in 3 "limited attendance" workshops: handsewing miniature garments (for an 18" Victorian doll), both undergarments and a dress, and fan-making. I always apply for ones that don't require a sewing machine, as I don't want to shlep one to southern California. In between, classes or lectures on all kinds of cool stuff. And a huge room of vendors....(sigh)

Just gotta make sure my arthritis is well under control...

bathing suit sewing

hi all,

i just joined this tribe, and i come with a question:

when sewing your own bathing suit, does it really need a lining? i have this nice thick lycra fabric that does not go transparent when wet, so i am wondering if the lining serves any other purpose. i am already experimenting with joining the top of one pattern to the bottom of another pattern, so i want to make this as simple as can be for myself. also, the lining is more expensive than the fabric!

Singer Futura 900 Bobbin Winding

Incredible fabric sale - EVERYTHING $2

I wanted to share with everyone a recent discovery:

Happy Stop (aka "Discount Fabrics")

M-Sat 10.30 - 5; cash only

Happy Stop is having a sale where everything is $2/yard (with the exception of the faux fur, which is $4...). The owner buys factory ends, and is apparently rather obsessive about doing so, because he currently has way more fabric than should reasonably be in one little shop. It's literally piled floor to ceiling, and in some cases, three feet deep in the aisles. Everything is $2/yard until he has enough space to organize again. Because it's factory ends, everything is fairly wide (60"), and there are lots of knits and synthetics and chiffons, although certainly there are many different styles of fabrics. Let's just say that the inventory leans heavily toward sparkly things. It is definitely worth taking a half hour and digging around; in the back room, I found a couple yards of green cotton with green, pink, and white embroidered flowers (it's much more breath-taking than the description). Price? $4. It's unbelievable. And if you buy the whole length of a piece instead of just by the yard, he'll cut you even further deals.

The owner may just kind of ignore you, but if you show interest, he'll give you a personal tour of all of his favorite pieces. He's quite a character.

I just walked out with 50+ yards of fabric, and thought you all might want to investigate as well. It's the least we can do to help make this guy able to pass fire code.

Each table has a deck of cards with a different topic on each card. Each card is turned over one at a time. People talk about the topic as they wish until everyone who wants to talk is finished. Then the next card is turned over. For example, for the Movie Table, topic cards include “Your favorite movie?” “Your favorite actor?” “Your worst movie experience?” “Your favorite theatre” “Your favorite movie snack?”. Script read-alouds
reading aloud scripts from TV, plays, movies, such as the Simpsons, Seinfeld, Friends, Mash, All in the Family, Hamlet, Shakespeare in Love,Buffy, Coupling, American Beauty. There are many scripts on the table. Pick one that you would like to read aloud. Select a table, invite others to join in. Everyone selects a character, and start reading aloud.

Food Sampler There is a different food sampler each Social Sampler. Some food sampler themes are ice creams, chocolates, coffees, potato chips, cookies. Odd Ice Creams with be sampled for May 26: Avacado, Buko (Baby Coconut), Ginger, Green Tea, Halo Halo (Buko, Langka, Ube, Pineapple, Mongo &Sweet Beans), Langka (also known as Jackfruit, a relative of the Fig), Lychee, Mango, Thai Tea, Sweet Coconut, and Ube (purple Yam).

Costumers Club activities include swap or sell fabric, clothing, or costumes' sewing circle talk; or meet potential new clients about new costumes, tuxes, or gowns; or finish a costume in a 'stitch and bitch' session. This is a group for costumers and seamstresses who make costumes, gowns, wedding dresses, and clothing for such events as Renaissance Faire, Dickens Faire, Science Fiction costume masquerade balls, Halloween balls and events, Sea of Dreams NYE, Anon Salon events, Costume cons, Belly Dancers outfits, Greater Bay Area Costume Group events, Art Deco's Gatsby picnic, Newport Week, San Francisco Waltzing Society, Friday Night Waltz New Year's Eve formal Waltz Balls, Peers and Gaskells formal balls.

Sing alongs
Sea Shanteys are songs traditionally sung by sailors to accompany and set the rhythm for certain kinds of heavy, repetitive work on board ship—raising and trimming the sails, raising the anchor, and working the pumps.

Musicals are the songs from musical plays and movies, such as Sound of Music, Grease, Singing in the Rain, Brigadoon, Hair, My Fair Lady, Oklahoma, Guys and Dolls.

Folk songs are just that: traditional folk songs.

This show ROCKS!
I went last Sunday and will be going back in a couple of weeks. Sometimes these shows disappoint (esp since there IS a surcharge to get into it...) but the sheer volume of what is available -- room after room, organized into great vignettes -- makes it well worth paying for if you miss a free day.
I spent LOTS of time nose-to-glass or as close as I could get to look at seamlines, pleats, draping.... mmmmm!

I.S.O: "Sewing Savior"

Al'lo,

I am posting here to find out if there are any "Sewing Saviors" out here that can make an idea of mine become reality? This year will be my first Burning Man... with that said (and off my chest), I have been toying with the following costume idea...

I'm looking to add some faux fur to a hooded vest, along with a couple of Leg & Arm Covers.
I'm 6'5"/ 235lbs and going for a Cowardly Lion meets Chewbacca look.

I've got some rough sketches, pix, a vest and a hoody. And my hunt for my fuzzy stuff starts this weekend. (Sorry...no pattern)

I'm curious to find out....

Who is willing, able, and available for a project like this AND what your service rate would be? (I plan to provide all materials needed)

I know we're still 4 months out from the event but I get the feeling everyone is going to be very busy, very soon. And seeing as this is going to be my first time....I really, REALLY want to make it special.

Hello everyone.
I'm sad to announce that my darling little shop afterglow was robbed early this morning, sometime between 12:00 (I looked at my shop while going home last night) and this morning at about 6:00, when my neighbor arrived at his dental lab & heard the alarm. The thieves hacked thru the thick wood door to get to the deadbolt, which they pried apart enough to kick the door in.
The thieves made off with a huge amount of clothing. They didn't touch the jewelry or accessories, tee shirts, or a rack with my newest pieces, Donna Lou's new pants, or Camilla's bicycle dresses. They targeted the big rack that included the main bulk of my designs and the collections of these designers, over 150 pieces in all & totalling over $12,500 in retail value:
Donna Lou (except for the sailor pants), Nicacelly, and Super Sugar Ray Ray, and the one remaining tunic by Porcelynne.
For you ladies, don't worry: your pieces are covered by my insurance, and you will all be taken care of.
My landlord immediately installed a metal sleeve around the door where the locks are, and will install yet another deadbolt & possibly a roll-down door, so I don't expect this to happen again.
If you could look out for anyone trying to sell my designs or the other designs, who you don't know, or can pass this email along to anyone who may hear or see anything, I'd really appreciate it. All items have sewn labels (mine is AC, the others are as mentioned above) and are tagged.
This is a tough blow to my little business, but I'm even tougher, so you can bet I'll be back in full force before too long, & I'm doing all I can to recover the lost afterglow collection.

Removing chalk marks

A coworker of mine is making her daughter-in-law's wedding dress. The fabric is a creamy off white and the chalk she has used to mark the skirt is pink. After marking all her darts and pleats she has discovered that even after washing a test swatch, the chalk marks can still be seen faintly. Does anyone have any ideas on how she can remove these chalk marks? Thank you in advance for any tips or ideas you can offer.

Micheal here. i've always wanted to learn to sew, and a friend gifted me a sewing machine. i learned how to (so far) thread a bobbin, sew a straight line, (its not easy learning from a book!) and my first project is a cloth grocery bag that came out ok for a first project thingy.
